Our Talavera pottery is made in El Salvador, Central America. Ceramics made in this style are a high-fire china crafted in the Spanish tradition. The hand-painted pieces are each one of a kind, individually painted to perfection by the highly-trained artists. In making Talavera Pottery, two kinds of clay are mixed together and the mixture is left to stand to allow some of the moisture to evaporate; potters then knead the clay with their feet. Each piece is made on a potters wheel or in a mold, and left to dry for between eight to twelve weeks. When dry, pieces are fired. The pieces are then submerged in varnish to give them the gloss and color of an authentic piece of Talavera pottery. After glazing, the pieces are hand painted and are decorated with mineral-based paints that allow them to remain outdoors without losing their color or gloss. Talavera pottery painters develop a very special skill that allows them to imagine the final color of pieces while they are molding them. Finally, the pieces are fired again, at very high temperature to give them the characteristic gloss of true Talavera pottery. |
